Make up Lesson 1

MAKE UP - LESSON ONE Base PRIMER Wonder how the girls look so flawless and radiant? Primer! It’s a bit like undercoat for foundation. I recommend the Bourjois Embellis range – its good quality, and relatively cheap at about £7. FOUNDATION The same colour as your tan please! Put on the tan, do a test patch on your arm to the depth of colour you are going for the competition and buy a foundation that matches this. Kolor by superdrug do some very good darker (and the slightly orange of fake tan) foundations for those on a small budget, No 7 and the likes of Estee Lauder and Elizabeth Ardern foundations for those with a bit more to spend. Powder either in a matching colour (max factor crème puff is good) or translucent. If you prefer you can use a bronzing powder to increase the depth of colour. Don’t forget to go right up to your hairline (and in your parting if you have one) and around your ears (especially behind), down to your tan line and blend like mad. Some people will tan their faces, others don’t like to. It’s personal choice really and depends on whether you can cope with people staring at your face and asking where you went on holiday despite the fact they saw you the day before. However, if you are not going to fake tan your face make sure you choose a heavier foundation, otherwise your skin can end up looking too pale and pasty against the strong eyes and lips.

Leticia’s Impossible Dream - SCD Results 9 December

Last night, we saw some super dancing, some lacklustre but lucky ad-libbing, and a couple of car crash moments!   But, don’t these four read my posts!  Stamping, necks, kicks and flicks - ring any bells???   And as for Matt - well, what can I say?  I really felt for him, it is horrible when you go blank -  I think it is all too much for him!   (Wonder what he is going to be like if the sympathy vote gets him as far as the final?) Best get himself some “Rescue Remedy” sharpish!
This evening watching the results show, I can’t say I was totally surprised at who went out, and I think she expected it was going to be her as well, but it is true to say I didn’t expect to see Alesha in the dance off?!   I bet it was a bit of a shock for her as well - goes to show regardless of how good you are and how much the judges rate you, the public can make or break you.  But what can the girl do - she hasn’t offended anyone, been showy or full of herself in any way.   Us phone voters are a funny breed!    It is well known that we vote for those we think of as “friends” or those who we feel sorry for.  People doing okay on their own do tend to get ignored.

Flavia looked like she was going to have a heart attack when they were called through “in no particular order”.   Still,  what this does mean is that we will ge to see Flavia and Matt do an Argentine Tango, and that should be really interesting!  Speaking of Argentine Tango, how fabulous was that display by Vincent and Flavia - it’s just as well they are a couple, it was very intense to say the least ………………….   I thought the show dancing was fab, both by the German formation team, and our own anton/erin, brendan/nicole.

Did anyone notice there were more than a few bits of dance dress flying off onto the floor tonight?

I hope and pray that they do away with the dance-off in future series.  Much as I enjoy seeing the Sunday show with the professional dancers, I feel saddened that people have to dance when they KNOW they are going home.    I too, am the age to play the Godmother and not Cinderella - You did us old girls  proud Leticia!   Good luck.

Best judge - Len.  glad to see him back on form.  Jet lag cleared perhaps?

SCD 8 December - what to look out for

WALTZ – The basic steps consist of walking steps, side steps and whisks, chasses, and lots of turns!.  A lot of the grace and elegance of the waltz is obtained by what is called “rise and fall”.    Look for a good hold,  a nice neck on the lady (no hunched shoulders Leticia please!) , no gaps between couples.  Footwork is particularly important in the slower dances, as the celeb can’t hide behind waggling hips!

VIENNESE WALTZ – No rise and fall here.  Its too fast to do it, even if the dancer wanted to, they would get sick.  Only three steps to this dance really, and the famous fleckle!  SCD VW is a lot more interesting than what you would get to see in a real life competition, believe it or not!

JIVE –  Look out for lots of spins, kicks and flicks.  However, what is particularly important in jive are the knees, ankles and balls of feet!   Jive is typically danced upright (some seem to lean over and down, Brendan C springs to mind), but this upright tends to make it look stiff and formal.   Judges will be looking for lots energy, and clean movements that are finished off properly at the arms.

SAMBA – A fun party dance from Rio Je Janeiro.   Think “bounce” from the waist down, rythym and look for lots of hip action.  The major characteristic of the samba is the vertical bounce action and this dance needs to be flamboyant to work best.

FOXTROT – Again look for heel leads, with the toe lowering as the body moves over it.   Rise and fall is still there, though perhaps not as obvious as with the waltz.  Look for sway, and contra-body movements.

PASO DOBLE -  The character of this dance is that of the matador and his cape or bull.  His demeanour is one of arrogance and swagger (he doesn’t want that bull knowing he’s scared)   Look out for:-  sharp, swift movements, a wide frame is wide to make himself look bigger and can look quite stiff.  The lady is very much a supporting role for the matador and might run around and be thrown about by him.   Look for foot stomping, strong arms and defined hands, and walking similar to a march.

AMERICAN SMOOTH – Count the lifts!  Should only be two!  A good percentage of this dance can be done out of hold, think of all those old Hollywood films, where ballroom was jazzed up to be interesting to the viewers.

Kenny Goes Home

Well, surprise, surprise!   SCD voters and judges have done it again, and someone has been sent home after giving their best dance.  How many times are we going to have to see this?

If the dance off was purely on that one dance, how on earth can Kenny (who did a marvellous job of leading what is known to be a notoriously difficult dance)  lose out to Leticia.  Granted, she has a rotten cold but she was practically  being dragged around the floor in places and at times she looked dazed and confused.

Realistically, Leticia has more to offer long term - but thats not what the dance off is about is it???

The fact that I knew what was going to happen courtesy of the BBC voiceover man didnt help matters either.  Even Kylie and the boys could not lift my mood.

It’s a sad night in the B-D-Online house.

Tonight’s Strictly Come Dancing Critique

The Bar has been raised!! My thoughts about tonight’s dancing are:-

The boys definitely came out on top!

Gethin was AMAZING!!! I loved his waltz so much, it was romantic and beautiful and everything it should have been. I definitely felt the connection between them flowing out of my TV! Well Done GETH!! (assuming the acting teacher brought it out of them and they are not really in LURVE!!) Latin was brilliant too - but he needs try to keep his head up!!

Matt - Both dances were Fantastic! Agree with the judges about your rumba arms. Wonderful! Get them hips going going though lad - borrow Leticia’ Hula hoop! I loved the tango and felt some of the comments were a bit harsh. Matt looked like a real man tonight.

Kenny - he was not a coat hanger at all. Rumba is hard, and all things considered, I think he did remarkably well. I think he pulled the short straw tonight as the Foxtrot and Rumba are probably the most difficult dances of all?! Gabby and Ola should be very proud of him!

Leticia - I really felt for her tonight, poor girl. It was plain to see that she was really poorly, and as to be expected it was reflected in her dancing. However, lots of nice steps and my daughter and I were up doing cha-cha with her in our living room! Hope she is feeling better soon.

Alesha - tango top line was great, smashing body movement with plenty of drama. I thought the steps looked a bit messy and not quite “right” - I kept expecting kicks, but none came except towards the end. I liked it, but I wasn’t blown away like I thought I would be. Have to say the same about the Latin, i was a little bored, as was my husband. I don’t think the judges comments matched the scores - ie harsh comments, high scores?

Best Judge award tonight goes to Craig (except for the thumb!)

It wasn’t the same without Kelly. We will all miss her. God rest Mr “Kelly’s Dad’s” soul.
