Strictly Come Dancing Week 5

The boys and girls have finally come together to give us our first week of “full” comp. I feel the programme is running on full steam now.

Rachel and Vincent. Poor Rachel went wrong in front of the judges and I think it affected her whole performance, which should have been better.! They samba’d to Shakira’s Hips Don’t Lie. Quite restrained, I thought. If I was a teacher I would write “could do better” Again she was put in a green coloured dress.
Scores: Craig 7, Arlene 7, Len 8, Bruno 8. Total 30.

Lisa and Brendan danced American Smooth to Frank Sinatra’s It Happened in Monterey. This was a lovely dance, nothing too complicated. I think Brendan choreographed a lovely routine, and worked within Lisa’s capabilities. It is lovely to see her confidence blossoming too. Her make up was nice tonight I thought. Vast improvement on last weeks.
Scores: Craig 8, Arlene 9, Len 9, Bruno 9. Total 35.

Heather and Brian. Now, as her salsa was so good, I expected this to be one of the best dances of the evening – I was extremely disappointed. In fact, I hated everything about it. From the music, to the outfit, to the hair, to the performance. Craig said it was “Lifeless, lacklustre, laboured,” and I have to agree. Not remotely surprised to see Heather in the Dance Off.. If she hadn’t danced so well in the first week, I would be suggesting a trip to a hypnotherapist to get some relaxation techniques. A big smile would have made a difference.
Scores: Craig 4, Arlene 6, Len 6, Bruno 7. Total 21.

Cherie & James. The singer KILLED this song for me (Eric Clapton’s Layla) but the dance was beautiful, elegant, composed, and quite frankly – DELICIOUS!! . Craig thought it lacked in Pizzazz – it was funny when James commented about it always being about quantity with him! I loved her dress, love black on white and that curly ribbon stuff seems to be quite the fashion these days.
Scores: Craig 7, Arlene 9, Len 9, Bruno 9. Total 34.

Mark and Hayley – well, it was energetic and fun all right! Sadly the Samba to Spice Up Your Life was lacking in anything resembling a samba. Bruce made a remark about him being caught in a fishing net, which I thought was quite apt! I think it says it all when the outfit worn by the man is the most memorable thing about the dance. Still, the acting coach has definitely brought Mark out of his shyness.
Scores: Craig 3, Arlene 5, Len 5, Bruno 4. Total 17.

Don and Lilia. This was peppered with footwork mistakes, but all in all not too bad. Don is very reserved, and has quite a stern face at times. The dancing was not bad enough to be in the dance off (or so I thought). They danced to Barry Manilow’s Can’t Smile Without You. I was desperately sad at the end of the dance off when Lilia was crying. It made me want to join in. At least Len said that he would have picked Don to stay, if that’s any consolation to him.
Scores: Craig 6, Arlene 6, Len 7, Bruno 6. Total 23.

Austin and Erin performed a Samba to Everybody Move Your Feet by Junior Senior. The judges didn’t seem to like it too much – but I thought it was great. I didn’t even spot the mistake – hubby did though and jumped right on it!. Austin needs to work on his upper body – his hips though – “those hips – the movement was fabulous” screeched Arlene. Erin is looking more beautiful every week.
Scores: Craig 8, Arlene 8, Len 8, Bruno 8. Total 32.

Andrew and Ola danced an American Smooth to You Know I’m No Good by Amy Winehouse. We know he isn’t very good, but don’t remind us in this way! Sad night for the GMTV presenter. He told us this was the worst he had danced all week, and he was clearly upset that he had nearly dropped Ola during the last lift. Interesting, in the back room when he commented “ah well, we will get to do it again” – meaning he thought he would definitely be in the dance off.
Scores: Craig 3, Arlene 4, Len 5, Bruno 5. Total 17.

Christine and Matthew, performing samba Baila Baila Conmigo by Ruben Gomez. This again, was not as good as I hoped it would be. The judges seemed to like it though. She is lucky in that she has a “presence”, and a personality that people seem to take to. Looking at the faces when names were being called, I think she thought she would be in the dance off.
Scores: Craig 7, Arlene 7, Len 8, Bruno 8. Total 30.

Jodie and Ian did their American Smooth to Steve Tyrell’s Witchcraft. I wanted to cry with happiness for Jodie. This was my favourite dance of the night except for maybe Cherie. Scores: Craig 7, Arlene 7, Len 8, Bruno 8. Total 30.

John and Kristina danced to Papa Loves Mambo by Perry Como. John is very funny, and I think it is this humour and personality that will see him through. It is people like him that have made this show as entertaining as it is. There was a really good bit where he was on his own and did some “stomping” that was very very funny!!! Wonder if it is on you tube yet? A few of the others who are having trouble relaxing should get some tips from John. Lowest score from the judges.
Scores: Craig 2, Arlene 4, Len 5, Bruno 5. Total 16.

Tom and Camilla were last up. They danced American Smooth to Chicago by Frank Sinatra. They got joint highest scores with Lisa and Brendan.
Scores: Craig 8, Arlene 9, Len 9, Bruno 9. Total 35.

Everything Else

I thought Bruces “joke” about Madonna’s marriage was totally uncalled for, and was in very poor taste. I was shocked by this. Can’t believe the rubbish he has been spouting lately.

Singer – Gethin’s squeeze Katherine Jenkins sang, while her “Viva La Diva” partner Darcy Bussell treated us to a beautiful dance. It was interesting when the others joined her, but personally I would have preferred her to have the floor to herself. It is always nice to see a dancer from another discipline. Just imagine if she was a celeb one year!! WOW!!

Pro-Dance – PASO… I was totally blown away by this! Lots of very clever moves. Amazing that nobody banged into anybody else.

Wonder what’s in store for us next week?
